    A late 18th century cast iron fireback. The pillars with cross banded ribbons surmounted with liberty caps. These ‘bonnet de la Liberté’ were adopted during the French Revolution, so much so that on 20 June 1792, King Louis XVI was obliged to don a liberty cap by a crowd that had stormed the palace of Tuileries.
