A good quality Japanned fireplace. The barrel frieze, centre block and jambs featuring, birds, temples and indigenous people. Dark blue/grey background colour. The Japanning is the art of imitating 17th Oriental lacquerwork, using layers of varnish, heat-dried, and then polished, to give an ebonised finish. Early 20th century. (Photo prior to restoration)
